First Dentures

Learning to wear dentures is akin to learning to ride a bicycle – it requires practice. Here are a few tips to help you make the most of your new dentures.

The lower denture often feels considerably looser than the upper one. To help keep it in place while eating, try to hold it down with your tongue at the back and take your time to adjust to the new fit. For the lower denture, securing it with implants is the best option.

When eating, start with small mouthfuls and cut your food into smaller pieces to avoid biting with your front teeth. Wait until you feel more accustomed to your dentures before using your front teeth, as this will help minimise irritation to your gums.

Try to chew food on both sides of your mouth simultaneously to ensure the dentures remain properly positioned as you adjust to the new fit. Begin with softer foods (such as eggs, fish, bread, and soup) before progressing to firmer items.

Do not be concerned if your speech is affected initially when you receive your dentures. As you become more comfortable with them in your mouth, your speech will return to normal.

When sleeping, it is advisable to wear your dentures for the first two or three nights to help your gums and tissues acclimatise. After this period, remove them at night, as your gums need rest to stay healthy. When you take out your dentures, always store them in room temperature water; if they dry out, they may change shape and colour.

You may experience sore spots during the first few days as your gums adjust. If you develop a sore spot, rinse your mouth with a saltwater solution. Should the sore spots become too uncomfortable and prevent you from wearing your dentures, make an appointment for an adjustment.

Clean your dentures thoroughly at night using water and a soft denture brush. Be sure to clean them over a towel or a basin of water to prevent breakage if they are dropped. When handling your lower denture, hold it in the middle rather than squeezing the ends together, as this may cause it to fracture.

Adjusting to new dentures takes time, so be patient. Using a saltwater solution to rinse your mouth is recommended to help speed up the process.
